Taiwan Headlines, Fri 6 Aug 2004:

The Athens Olympic Organization Committee has reportedly bowed to China's pressure asked Taiwan to remove its posters from baggage carts at Athens' international airport and buses in the city, the Government Information Office said on Thursday.

"Our advertisement contractor in Athens told us this morning that the National Olympic Committee in Athens had made a verbal request to remove all of our posters from the 500 carts at Athens' international airport and the side of 50 of the city's buses," GIO Director-General Lin Chia-lung told a press conference late Thursday night.

"The GIO representative stationed in Italy and a lawyer have flown in to Athens to review the situation and take care of the matter," Lin said.

"While we do everything in accordance with the regulations set down by the Olympic Committee, we hope this matter doesn't escalate into a political incident, and we're making efforts to better understand the situation and remove the obstacle," Lin said.
